No recent avalanches have been reported in the area. If you see any activity on the Two Thumb Range, please make a public observation. It helps us to produce accurate forecasts. Mainly fine but the odd afternoon shower.Wind at 1000 metresNorthwest 55 km/h but gale 75 km/h in exposed places, easing and becoming light in the evening.Wind at 2000 metresNortherly 60 km/h but gale 80 km/h in exposed places, turning westerly 55 km/h by midday, easing to 30 km/h early evening. Freezing level2600 metres, lifting above 3000 metres in the morning. High cloud may keep the freeze away on Sunday. But if we get a clear night expect a high sliding danger on all slopes. There could be high consequences with lots of rocks in the runouts. Carrying ski crampons, ice axe and boot crampons and careful evaluation of the conditions is recommended.
The snowpack is well settled and stable. Glide cracks have been reported in neighbouring regions. There is a possibility of similar conditions in the Two Thumbs although there have been no reports. Sunny aspects: Mostly bare ground below about 2000m. What little snow is left is thin and patchy. It has gone through multiple melt freeze cycles. Shady aspects: Although cold layered snow still exists deeper in the pack, even shady terrain is capped by a strong melt freeze crust. South east facing slopes have good snow cover above 1700m, reaching 100cm in sheltered spots. Patches of snow extend down to 1500m. Southwest slopes are thinner with about 50cm cover.
